Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMS)
Wallingford, CT and Princeton, NJ.

In 1995, Aphios entered into a three (3) year Collaborative Research Agreement with the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMS) to screen a minimum of 10,000 marine microorganism extracts over a two (2) year period.  After screening 4,000 extracts. 120 “hits” were obtained in several different therapeutic areas: 63 anti-bacterial;14 anti-fungal; 14 cytotoxic; 9 immunology; 16 obesity; and 4 cardiovascular.  Six cytotoxic hits were against a murine lung cancer cell line in a screen for oncology.  These hits were obtained from two microorganisms which were isolated from a sponge with demonstrated bioactivity against a human lung cancer cell line.  Utilizing DNA fingerprinting and molecular taxonomy, one microbe was identified. BMS scaled-up both of these “hits” for chemical identification and dereplication.
